Volunteers are our heart.
Are you passionate about horses and animals and looking for a unique volunteering opportunity? Look no further than our small animal sanctuary!
Located in the beautiful Lincolnshire countryside, the Northcote Heavy Horse Centre is a charitable organisation dedicated to the conservation and welfare of heavy horses. As a volunteer, you'll have the chance to work with these magnificent animals on a daily basis, learning about their care and handling from experienced staff and fellow volunteers.
Tasks can include everything from mucking out stables and grooming horses to assisting with training sessions and helping with feeding and yard work and DIY jobs. Whether you're an experienced animal handler or just starting out, there's a role for everyone at the centre.
Not only will you gain hands-on experience with horses, but you'll also be contributing to a worthwhile cause and making a difference in the lives of these beautiful animals. Plus, you'll get to spend time in a peaceful, natural setting and make new friends with like-minded people.

No Experience Needed
Many of our volunteers over the years have started with little or no animal experience. We love teaching, helping and exploring future career paths with our volunteers.
Any Level Of
Fitness
Another benefit to volunteering with us is for a little bit of extra exercise! By mucking out animals you’ll be helping yourself to get into a great level of fitness!
Rewarding To The
Max
It’s no secret that volunteering your time can boost your mental wellbeing. You’re giving something back to society. And that’s always a good thing!
New friends
There’s nothing like that feeling of making new friends. When you join our team, you’ll be joining a bunch of other like minded, friendly and fun people!
“You would sometimes think we have hyenas at the sanctuary with all the laughing going on! - Emma”
There have been countless memories made by our volunteers over the decades. Come and join the fun!
New skills
Not only will you be making a difference to our animals, you’ll also be learning new skills and gaining new experiences.
From simple things such as learning how to correctly groom, feed and clean animals to even more involved projects that can include DIY!
We can work at a steady pace to suit your needs and we will never make you feel out of place.By learning new skills you can help better yourself and even move into a new job career.
Other Roles
A lot of people think it’s just animal work, the truth is that there are plenty of other essential jobs to be done! So if you don’t want to do any animal hands on jobs, you are just as needed!
DIY
You can imagine the constant odd jobs that need doing. Things like fences always need mending, stables always need painting and other long term projects need completing.
Projects
There are always several ongoing projects at our sanctuary. For starters we are building a whole new chicken enclosure. This includes concreting a large area and building new safe and secure runs.
Work experience & placements
We are proud to support various Colleges and Universities including Lincoln College, Boston College, Riseholme College & the Grimsby institute with their work placement offerings. We regularly have students volunteering and learning animal management courses.
If this is something that interests you then please either get in touch with us directly or through your college or school.
We are a perfect hands on, insured place to learn animal management skills.
